Mr. and Mrs. Ell

The details from the lovely wedding of Ciera and Anthony Ell along with the special moments shared with family from across the United States makes this wedding something to remember!  I was honored to photograph this event on the exact weekend that the brides parents were married, 20 years prior, at the same location...the bride's grandmother's home in beautiful Woodbine, Maryland. As if the sentiment of the family legacy was not enough, the bride's father's family traveled all the way from North Dakota and shared traditional Native American Mandan Hidatsa song and dance with all the guests! It was an incredible day and you can share in every moment using the links below.

Little Mermaid marries her Prince Charming

Disney movies make marriage and love into a fairy tale that seems almost unattainable.  The idea of a Disney prince and princess has always filled heads and hearts with a idealistic view of a partner and what "Happily Ever After" really means.  As most of us know, perfection is not what makes a partner "perfect", but rather compromise, understanding, and shared trust.  Life is not always the Disney fairy tale and a curve-ball is always around the corner.

It takes a love like that of Emmaline and Kody Moser to show that Disney fairy tales can and do exist.  Though trial and tribulation, happy days and sad, these two lovely individuals have weathered a few of life's greatest storms and yet stand strong!  Happy endings don't just exist in a movie, but are visible in each moment shared by anyone is love!

A Farmer's Wife

Mr. and Mrs. Richards spoke their vowels amongst their closest friends and family as the sun set on behind an orange and gold Pennsylvania hillside.  Not a dry eye remained as the heartfelt joining of two farm families followed the poem by Megan Gottman, "So God Made a Farmer's Wife."

And on the 9th day God looked down and said, “I have just asked a lot of this old boy, he is going to need some help,” So God made a farmer’s wife.
God said, “She has to get up before dawn and not let that farmer hit snooze for the third time, cook breakfast while he is milking cows, wake and ready the brood for school, take supper to him in the field and remind him to quit in time to get to the school board meeting in town.” So God made a farmer’s wife.
“I need someone strong enough to carry his children and at 8 months along run cows out of corn field. Someone to run for parts, come home and throw a meal together and deliver another meal to a sick neighbor. Someone to mend his clothes and keep them clean, who will deliver her good towels and own hair dryer to the barn to warm a shivering calf.” So God made a farmer’s wife.
“I need someone who will trade off with him in the barn while saving that newborn colt. And when it dies, she will cry, when he says, ‘Maybe next year.’ Someone who can use that ax and knows where to find it. Who can fashion a child’s belt out of baling twine, while running horses back in and fixing the hot wire. And who at planting time finishes her forty-hour week by Tuesday noon, 16 of those hours at her in town job.” So God made a farmer’s wife.
God knew that farmer would need someone out there bucking bales & bouncing along at double speed helping get that hay in ahead of the rain. Someone who would run with him to the neighbors’ when he sees smoke and then come up with enough food to feed the tired, hungry, impromptu firemen. So God made a farmer’s wife.
God said, “She has to be strong enough to heave bales, scoop out bins, carry feed buckets, yet gentle enough to fix a child’s boo-boo with a duct tape & shop towel bandage in the middle of a field. It has to be someone who won’t cut corners when it comes to the land and animals but cut them in her clothing, grocery, beautician and decorating budget. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed and rake and disc and plow and mix calf bottles and load livestock and haul them to town. Who makes sure everyone is bathed and in the pew Sunday morning for church.”
“Somebody who would trust his guidance, but offer her suggestions, as he baled his family together in love and sharing. Who gently reminds him of who he is working for. Someone who would laugh, then sigh and then reply with smiling eyes, when her daughter says she wants to grow up and ‘marry a farmer.’” So God made a farmer’s wife.

Little Love

Attending very few baby showers, as many of my closest friends are only now in the works to have a little one, I was extremely excited to be a part of Amanda and Sam's celebration!  The "Storybook" theme was conveyed absolutely perfectly!  As you can see in their gallery, Amanda and Sam's family created dishes that were inspired by some of the most popular children's storybooks!  The decorations even included bow-tie napkins and a Mother Goose cake!  I was also very proud to take touching images of the love Amanda and Sam have for each other and their growing little love!

UPDATE:  Amanda gave birth to a healthy and happy 8lb baby Avery in January.  Mother, baby and father are adjusting well to their new family and enjoying their first few weeks together!

A Starry Night

An art history enthusiast, I was elated when Kyle and Stephanie asked me to be a part of their Van Gogh inspired celebration!  A dapper couple, every detail from their engagement photos and wedding rings to their shoes and ties spoke to an artist and social era long since passed.

A contemporary photographer’s dream, Kyle and Stephanie chose to liven their engagement session by playfully throwing homemade powdered paint (called Holi paint) at one another in the shades of their alma mater, West Virginia University!  This Hindu celebration of love dates back to the 7th Century and is kept alive today in India, Nepal, and various other regions around the world.  If you haven’t seen the spectacle of colour check it out on Pinterest!

On the big day, friends and family helped the couple bring Vincent Van Gogh’s 1889 painting, “Starry Night” to life in the 21st Century with elegant décor and excitement!  Glittery paper stars lined the isle, blue and gold West Virginia marbles swooped across every table, and of course lovely shoes, jewelry, and flowy dresses mimicked the vibrant blues and gold’s within Van Gogh’s vision.

The ceremony was lit by the setting sun as Stephanie and Kyle said their “I Do’s” in the Gazebo of Berkeley Springs Park surrounded by loved ones.  The reception venue brought guests inside Van Gogh’s painting as glittery lights, vibrant fabrics, and stars hung from every corner!  Guests looked like Van Gogh’s tale tell streaks of color as they danced away the Starry, Starry Night!

Home Grown Wedding

On the first Saturday of our sunny 2015 September, I was lucky enough to spend the evening with Amanda and Adam Platter along with their wonderful friends and family.  The wedding took place on Amanda's brother's farm in Hancock, with the gorgeous valley and rustic barns as the backdrop to the celebration!  Every detail involved the love of friends and family, from the beautiful sunflowers lining the ceremony isle (that Amanda's mother patiently cultivated over the last few months) to the hand-built barn (by Amanda's father) that held the guest's cards.  At the finale of the celebrations, guests danced and ate delicious down-home cooked favorites in the stunning restored antique barn.  From start to finish, this wedding took the cake!

Wedding Season Prep

With the temperatures dropping and the leaves starting to change, my favorite time of year is almost upon us and fall weddings are almost here!  In anticipation of photographing my fabulous fall brides and grooms and the blooming love of my engaged couples, I want to share a few of my favorite wedding websites.

Whether looking for a fun backdrop or prop for your upcoming engagement session or to create an interactive photo booth for your big day, Etsy is my go-to provider for handmade décor!  Many Etsy are happy to work with couples to create custom décor that emphasize the theme or connection for every event!

Another favorite place to find a specific or discounted wedding item is Ebay!  Think about it, many couples spend thousands of dollars on the tiny details that make the table décor and decorations of their bid day perfect and then the supplies are useless in everyday life.  Where do all these very slightly used supplies go?...Ebay!

I'd love to hear about other vendors and artisans who you love!
